The Colts (10-17, 4-11 Region 2) built up a big lead, but the Aviators (8-15, 5-10 Region 2) slowly chipped away and won, as the race to avoid the bottom spot in the conference in order to make the conference tournament is reaching its zenith.
Cossatot got out to a great start, leading 22-8 in the middle of the first half. While the dominance mellowed, UAC still held a commanding 30-23 halftime lead with deputizing starting point guard Devean Newton, Dylan Glover and Bryce Goodwin all having six points.
Eventually the Aviators took the lead a few minutes into the second half, but after a few chaotic lead changes, ASUN eventually settled into a small multi-possession lead.
ASU Newport held onto this lead, securing a crucial 67-58 win as they move one game ahead of the Cossatot, also grabbing the tiebreaker via the season sweep. Prior to the game, the two sides had been tied for last place in the conference, with the bottom spot being excluded from the Region 2 Tournament in Harrison, Ark. starting Feb. 25.
Sophomore center Knighten Day was a constant presence in the post for UAC, leading the team with 11 points.
Cossatot now returns home for one final homestand, with a pair of 5:30 p.m. matchups on deck — Monday against Shorter College and Wednesday against North Arkansas.
